Amphibians and fish

Among the services of Clínica Nido we have advice and medical care for the wide variety of species of aquatic or semi-aquatic life. Both amphibians and fish are animals that present particularities in terms of their diet, environment, breeding, reproduction and behavior, therefore, the development of diseases associated with management in captivity is relatively common.

Approximately 7,500 species of amphibians have been described, distributed across a wide variety of ecosystems, 41% of which are in danger of extinction (Red List 2021). They are divided into three groups: anurans (toads and frogs), caudates (salamanders and salamanders) and gymnosperms (caecilians).

At Clínica Nido we are specialists in amphibians and we offer advice to all those interested in these species regarding their management as well as resolving all queries related to the creation of a terrarium or suitable habitat to guarantee the well-being of these animals.

The species we most commonly treat are the salamander (Ambystoma mexicanum), frogs (family Dendrobatidae, Ceratophrys ssp. and Bombinas ssp.), toads (bufonids) and salamanders such as the fire-bellied newt (Hypselotriton orientalis).

On the other hand, we have a department of aquatic animal medicine. Our professionals are available for care and recommendations about the maintenance of aquarium species, both freshwater and saltwater.

In addition, we offer a hospitalisation service for these specimens. The main species we treat at Clínica Nido are freshwater fish such as cichlids (Angel fish, Discus and Oscar fish), carp (the most common is Goldfish) and others such as members of the family of poeciliids, carcids (tetras) and osphronemids (the Betta fish being their main representative).

The most important thing for the proper keeping of fish in aquariums is to know the biology of the species housed, providing an environment that is adapted to its needs (temperature, dimensions, chemical parameters of the water), administering the most balanced diet possible and providing a fauna and flora that is adapted to its ecological requirements.

The main pathologies associated with fish housed in captivity are related to the development of parasites, fungi, bacteria and viruses. The presence of swim bladder disease or constipation is also common. The best preventive tool is to maintain a correct water quality and to guarantee the maintenance of the equipment that is part of the aquarium.

He pasado mucho tiempo en esta clínica durante meses y he podido ver tanto mi atención como la de los demás y solo puedo decir que si tienes una mascota, no dudes en llevarla a esta Clínica. Hace un par de meses perdí a mi conejo, Tambor. Llevabamos unos meses de lucha Eli y yo esperando que mejorará cada vez más pero al final no pudo ser, pero escribo esto porque quiero recalcar la atención que recibí semanalmente  por cada uno del equipo, Ali, Noe, Miguel, etc etc pero sobretodo a Eli que no pudo hacer mejor su trabajo y su trato como persona fue excepcional. Me gustaría recalcar también la seguridad que tenía cada vez que dejaba allí a Tambor, sabía que lo querían mucho y que estaba en buenas manos así que de verdad no dudes en confiar en ellos. Y equipo, daros mi enhorabuena y que sepaís que os recuerdo con mucho cariño, sois un ejemplo a seguir y como estudiante de Veterinaria os admiro.
