Las Fallas is one of the most emblematic celebrations in Valencia, but the constant noise of firecrackers can have a great impact on animals, especially rabbits, which are extremely sensitive to sound stimuli.
For this reason, at NIDO, in collaboration with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Cardenal Herrera-CEU University and Ethoclinic Valencia, we are carrying out a study to investigate how the pyrotechnics of the Fallas affect the emotional health of rabbits. Your participation can make a big difference in this project.
Why study the impact of firecrackers on rabbits?
.
Rabbits are particularly vulnerable to noise due to their highly sensitive nervous system. The din of firecrackers and pyrotechnics, so characteristic of the Fallas, can cause them a significant level of stress, affecting not only their emotional well-being, but also their physical health.
How to identify stress in rabbits during the Fallas?
.
Recognising the signs of stress in rabbits is crucial for early action to minimise the impact of firecrackers. Some of the most common symptoms are:
- Changes in behaviour. Rabbits may be more skittish, hide for long periods or be on constant alert.
- Accelerated breathing.Stress can manifest itself through gasping or breathing faster than normal.
- Tense body postures. Such as scratching the floor or chewing on the bars of the cage insistently.
If you notice any of these signs, it is important to take steps to reduce your rabbit’s stress level and, if they persist, consult a specialised veterinarian.
How can you help with our research?
Our aim with this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment Gabapetin, a drug indicated for the management of stress in rabbits during periods of high noise exposure.
With the information gathered, we will be able to analyse the impact of pyrotechnics on their welfare and determine whether additional measures are needed to improve their quality of life.
